Ahmedabad: While the city grapples with stray dog menace, in a shocking development, endangered black bucks in Velavadar sanctuary are being hounded by packs of wild dogs.

A wild elephant attacked a farmer and injured him at Chikkara in Gowdalli on Sunday.

The injured has been identified as G V Appaswamy. The incident occurred when he was walking towards his field in the morning. Though his wife alerted the neighbours, by the time they reached the spot, the elephant disappeared in the coffee estate.

Though he was shifted to Primary Health Centre in Gowdalli, later he was shifted to Hassan hospital for further treatment. RFO Keshvegowda visited the spot.

Aizawl, July 31: Armies of rats have ravaged maize and other crops in Mizoram, agricultural officials said on wednesday.
Aizawl district alone accounted for more than 20 percent of maize harvest loss after rats damaged crops, State Agriculture Department officials said after maize harvest at Phullen and surrounding villages in eastern part of Aizawl district.
In south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district, rats not only destroyed maize but also nibbled standing paddy stems, District Agriculture Officer Rohmingthanga Colney said.

KOLKATA: Frequent spotting of jackals and dogs on the runway of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport by pilots during landing has prompted the Airports Authority of India (AAI) here to seek the assistance of the State's wildlife officials in controlling the menace.

The state unit of All India Youth Federation (AIYF) has alleged widespread irregularities in the various projects of the forest department. The Joint Secretary of the AIYF state unit, Subhash Dutta, said that there were numerous instances of misappropriation of funds by the department. He made the claim after receiving the details applied for under the Right to Information Act 2005.

The elephant of the Samayapuram Mariamman temple will be handed over to the Forest Department. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department has issued an order to shift the pachyderm immediately. The 19-year old male elephant, Mariappan, has often been turning restive for the past couple of years causing anxiety to temple officials and devotees. Officials have arrived at the decision in consultation with veterinary experts from the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and local veterinary assistants.

A marauding herd of elephants is devouring standing ahu crops, the only means of livelihood for the flood-hit farmers of Majuli, giving the residents of the river island no other option than to witness the devastation in silence. Sources said that the elephants have been wreaking havoc in the saporis (sandbanks) in Phulonibari, Meragar, Salmara, Kathalkhua, Kathamia and Bonoria areas since the last couple of days.

The Forest Department will provide solar lights for electrification of six remote villages in the district. A meeting was held today between the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner and Forest officials to discuss the Centre-sponsored project. Preliminary details regarding the implementation of the project were discussed in the meeting. The use of solar lights may be effective in tackling the elephant menace in these interior villages. Though it has not been finalized yet, there are plans to include Hatisal and Dainigaon in Neamati area and a Majuli village under the project.
