LUCKNOW: With the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) expressing its inability to develop a power plant in the backward Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, the Mayawati Government on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding with a private developer, Bajaj Hindustan Group, for setting up a 1980-MW thermal power plant in Lalitpur district of the State.

Chief Secretary Avani Vaish reviewed the progress of under-construction irrigation projects at a meeting at the Mantralaya here today. The Chief Secretary instructed the officers to complete those minor irrigation projects on priority basis whose 80 per cent work has been completed so that they can benefit ensuing crops.

For, it may land you in lock-up as it happened with 18 local farmers on Saturday.

With the summer season reaching its peak, shortage of water is beginning to be felt all over the State. There are reports of handpumps going dry at many rural places. For the rural people the handpumps and wells are the only source of water. The situation in six districts of Bundelkhand has become precarious.
