Kolkata, 11 Feb: As part of a countrywide exercise, the census of the big cats in Buxa tiger reserve in north Bengal would begin by the end of this month and continue till April, Mr RP Saini, field director of the reserve, said today.

Alipurduar, Jan. 14: The forest department has decided to develop an eco-tourism spot at the Buxa Tiger Reserve, where eight men had died in encounters with forest guards over timber smuggling in the past five years.

The state forest department is facing a problem to relocate the villages situated within the Buxa Tiger Reserve after villagers started getting pattas of forest land under the Forest Rights Act. The forest department had initiated a plan to make the Buxa Tiger Reserve located in Alipurduar subdivision of Jalpaiguri district human settlement free after human-animal conflict went up alarmingly.

Alipurduar, Nov. 4: The PWD has floated tenders for a metalled road passing through the Buxa Tiger reserve, which, foresters said, would spoil a trekking route and expose the core area of the reserve to unwanted tourists.
