The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to look into an NGO’s plea seeking CBI probe against former Karnataka Minister D K Shivakumar, his brother D K Suresh and nine other mining companies in connection with illegal iron ore mining.

A three-judge bench presided over by Justice Aftab Alam told the CEC to submit a report after examining the application filed by Dharwad based-NGO Samaj Parivartana Samudaya (SPS).

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to look into the alleged illegalities committed by some mines including Sesa Goa and Mysore Minerals in Karnataka.

It also asked the CEC to assess the quantum of loss caused to the exchequer on account of illegal mining by lease holders in categories A, B, and C. A three-judge green bench headed by Justice Aftab Alam asked the Supreme Court-appointed panel to study and file a report on the allegations made by Samaj Parivartan Samudaya, an NGO, which had sought a probe by the CBI or the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the alleged illegalities committed by some mines under A, B, and C categories in Karnataka.

Goa Mining Affected People's Front has demanded a raise in the dole announced by the state government and resumption of stalled activity in a sustainable manner.

"Firstly, we have not asked the government for any schemes or packages. How long will the government support the people? The amount proposed is not adequate....We do not want to live like beggars but want a life of dignity", Christopher Fonseca, spokesman, Goa Mining Affected People's Front (GMAPF) told PTI. The organisation, which has been holding demonstrations at Azad Maidan here for the last two weeks, said it would intensify the protests across the state if their demands are not looked into.

Company aims to produce 10 million tonnes of iron ore per annum in the first phase from the proejct

Vedanta group firm Sesa Goa has finalised the capital expenditure plan for its Liberian iron ore mining project and plans to begin shipments from it from February 2014, a top company official said. The company is aiming to produce 10 million tonnes of iron ore per annum in the first phase from Liberia's Western Clusters project, which it had acquired in two phases for about $123.5 million (about Rs 595 crore).

KOLKATA: Domestic steelmakers JSW SteelBSE -0.42 % and Kalyani SteelsBSE 1.31 % have sought reopening of iron-ore mines in Karnataka to tide over the raw material shortage faced by the industry. The two companies say they are forced to operate their plants at 70% and 30% capacity respectively.

"We are facing shortage of ore despite the Supreme Court order on reopening of Karnataka mines. Only five mines are operating in the state," Seshagiri Rao, joint managing director of JSW Steel said.

The Goa government will file an affidavit in the Supreme Court tomorrow, in which it will highlight the socio-economic impact of suspension of iron ore mining activities in the state since October last year. The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Goa government to respond to a petition alleging violation of its October 5 ban on mining and transportation of iron and manganese ore in the state. The forest bench led by Justice Aftab Alam also issued a notice to the Central Empowered Committee and two private companies accused of shipping out iron ore and posted the matter for further hearing on February 15.

The petition, filed by NGO Goa Foundation, alleged that the state government had allowed export of iron ore without verifying the firms’ claims that it was extracted in Maharashtra, not Goa.

PANJIM: State government’s reluctance to act on Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) directions to keep in abeyance all NOCs granted for export of Maharashtra origin iron ore, has proved fruitful to the trading company ~ Prime Minerals ~ which so far has exported 60,000 metric tonnes of ore from Goa.

Prime Minerals, earlier this month, was granted NOC by the Directorate of Mines and Geology for export of 72,000 metric tones of ore, it claimed had been brought to Goa from Maharashtra. The export of the same had begun from Panjim port, a couple of days back.
