ANGUL: Coal supply to Nalco captive power plant was hit on Tuesday following a fire mishap at the rapid loading system in linked Bharatapur coal mine at Talcher coalfield. The fire destroyed the conveyer of the rapid loading system of Nalco at the mine.

The situation in Nalco on Wednesday became more serious due to the acute shortage of coal with only less than 30,000 MT of the stock left for the captive power plant at Angul. Without arranging this most important raw material, the management recently operated 240 new pots at the smelter plant.

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday signed an agreement with the World Bank for renovation and modernisation of 640 mw of old coal-fired power plants. The rehabilitation project entails a cost of $303.4 million of which $180 million will be met through IBRD (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development) loan and $45.4 million from a grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The state can look forward to overcoming power shortage by 2011.
