PARADIP: The survey work at the proposed Posco steel plant site, Gobindpur near here, resumed today, four days after anti-Posco agitators agreed to cooperate with the State Government on it. Seeking to zero down on the right healing touch to rectify the political damage from the 26-year-old Bhopal gas tragedy, the Group of Ministers (GoM) set up by the PM will look afresh at remediation measures as well as the complexities of giving additional compensation to victims. This also raises the legal issue of whether Dow Chemicals can be made to pay for the added reimbursements.

Bhopal: MP Congress Committee spokesman Arif Masood said that in the meeting of union group of ministers to be held in Delhi on June 18 priority should be given to the compensation to be given to gas victims. The family of the deceased in gas tragedy should be given Rs 10 lakh as compensation and those affected by gas tragedy should be given Rs 5 lakh as compensation.

The alacrity shown by the government in setting up a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into all issues of the Bhopal gas tragedy - including adequacy of compensation - was clearly missing just three years ago when the UPA government opposed tooth and nail any enhancement of payment to the sufferers.

NEW DELHI: The Manmohan Singh-led government is under pressure from Washington on the Civil Nuclear Liability Bill and the proposed legislation bears the handiwork of the U.S. nuclear industry lobby. Hence it must be scrapped.
