The Government has implemented several development schemes worth more than Rs 1,126 crore in the district for the past two years, said District-in-Charge Minister J Krishna Palemar.

The government is planning to implement livestock insurance scheme in 14 districts of the State to support the farmers in insuring the cattle.

According to a press release, National Insurance Company Ltd, divisional office, in front of Central Market, Mangalore will provide the insurance facility for livestock. The aim is to insure 10,000 cattle in Dakshina Kannada district.

Although rain receded in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on Wednesday, it claimed the life of Rama Marakala (48) of Manur of Kota Gram Panchayat area in Kundapur. Marakala, who was going to her paddy field, slipped and fell, suffocating in the mud.

Shores in undivided Dakshina Kannada are tainted by botches of oil deposit, which have left many unanswered questions in the minds of people.

Jungle Lodges & Resorts (JLR), the state-owned eco-tourism company, is expanding its operations in the state to promote eco-tourism. It plans to open five more resorts in select locations, JLR managing director N D Tiwari said.

The water-level of Netravati river, which is a prominent water source for the district, is reducing considerably that it may dry up completely within few days.

Thousands of residents in Belthangady, Bantwal and Mangalore taluk depend on Netravati river for agriculture and other purposes. Due to reduction in rainfall, the river flow has been reduced considerably.

''The State Government has already released Rs 1.70 crore to find solution to the drinking water crisis in Dakshina Kannada district. Additional Rs 2 crore required for the purpose will be released within 15 days,'' said District-in-Charge Minister J Krishna Palemar.

Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Nagaraj said a probe would be conducted into the unauthorised road works being done in Balur and Miyaru reserve forests coming under Mudigere and Belthangady taluks respectively.

Speaking to Deccan Herald on Wednesday, he said he was unaware of the developments until they were reported in newspapers.
