In the backdrop of ban on iron ore laden lorries, Iron Ore Lorry Owners Association has filed a writ in High Court which will come up for hearing on August 4, said RTO H N Ramesh.

Despite the district administration banning the movement of iron ore laden lorries on National Highway 48 in Dakshina Kannada, they have continued to enter the district.

At least 74 people died in rain-related incidents in Karnataka since June as the state received 391 mm of rainfall in the last one-and-half months against the normal average of 328 mm, Revenue Minister G Karunakara Reddy informed the assembly today.

Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat has decided to meet the Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development to demand additional funds for drinking water project and to keep forth various other demands.

The decision was taken during the 18th general body meeting of the ZP held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of ZP President Venkat Dambekodi.

The Udupi district recorded an average rainfall of 27.40 mm for the last 24 hrs.

Udupi received a minimum of 9.20 mm, Kundapur 10.80 mm and Karkala received highest of 62.40 mm rainfall in the district.

The district suffered an estimated loss of Rs 2.67 lakh in the last 24 hrs. a total number of 17 houses were damaged in the district.

Dakshina Kannada district has received 67.2 mm rainfall on Wednesday. Though flood like situation has arisen in some places, the district administration is all set to tackle the situation, said in-charge Deputy Commissioner Prabhakar Sharma.

The incessant rains have claimed two more lives, one each in Dakshina Kannada and Chikmagalur.

A woman was washed away in a stream at Aranthod in Sullia on Monday. The deceased is Baby (65). In Chikmagalur, a girl was washed away in a stream near Kundur estate in Mudigere taluk on Monday. The deceased is Sheela (15).

Out of the 18 blood samples sent for test from Uppinangady and Puttur limits in Dakshina Kannada districts for dengue fever, 8 have been tested positive, said District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Jagannath.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, he said all the blood samples will be sent again to Bangalore for re-confirmation.
