Central dam safety law needs assured funding

The Centre has decided to put the onus on state governments for ensuring safety and maintenance of dams across the country. The Union Cabinet today approved a draft legislation on dam safety measures that was earlier circulated to all states.

With several dams across the country being nearly half-a-century old, the Government on Thursday approved a legislation which seeks to monitor their safety at regular intervals.

An expert team of seismologists from Bangalore will visit villages near Almatti reservoir on May 7 to study the mild tremors occurring frequently in the region.

Hyderabad, May 3: The state has demanded a survey by technical experts to decide the actual height of the controversial Almatti dam in Karnataka.
