DISMISSING the contention of opposition parties that the DMK government had compromised the rights of the State by allowing the constitution of a high-level committee to study the safety aspects of Mullaiperiyar dam, Chief Min- ister M Karunanidhi on Friday said that "nothing is lost now as the Tamil Nadu government has not compromised its rights''.

New Delhi: The Mullaperiyar dam case took a new twist on Wednesday with the Supreme Court constituting a high-level empowered committee to go into all issues, including the safety aspects of the dam, raising the water level beyond 136 ft as also Kerala

THE drilling of boreholes has begun for collecting rock samples to test the rock levels prior to the construction of th new dam at Mullaiperiyar.

A team of experts was doing the drilling exercise from the Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Science and Technology (LBS) in Thiru vananthapuram.

On Wednesday, the team came across mild rock at a depth of 2.5 metre.

KATTAPPANA: Engineers of the Lal Bahadur Sastri Centre for Science and Technology will start drilling on Tuesday at five locations in the area identified for the construction of a new dam across the Mullaperiyar to study whether the rocks there are strong enough to support the proposed structure.

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has represented to Government of India to ask Narmada Control Authority (NCA) to allow raising the height of the Narmada dam from 12.92 metres, stationary since December 2006, to full reservoir level (FRL) of 138.68 metres.

In the hotly contested Mullaperiyar dam case, the focus on Tuesday turned to the feasibility of a new dam with the Supreme Court putting specific query to the lawyer of Tamil Nadu asking why the state was so "sensitive" about the construction of a new reservoir.

KOCHI: The Dam Design Committee for the new dam at Mullaperiyar on Saturday primarily identified the spot for the construction of the dam.

The spot, which is around 380 metres on the down stream of the existing dam, was fixed following a visit by members of the Dam Design panel.
