SILCHAR, April 7: Committee on People and Environment (COPE) in a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh of Manipur expressed its deep concern at the construction of Tipaimukh Dam despite opposition from naturalists and environmentalists of Northeast. There have been protest demonstrations by NGOs in Manipur, Mizoram and Barak Valley of Assam, besides that of in Bangladesh.

New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu government suffered a setback on Monday with the Supreme Court dismissing its application seeking to recall the order appointing an Empowered Committee, headed by the former Chief Justice of India, Justice A.S. Anand, to go into the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam.

IN a fresh twist to the Mul- laiperiyar dam row, Tamil Nadu on Monday told the Supreme Court that it was not interested in adjudicat- ing the dispute with Kerala before the special empow- ered committee appointed by the apex court for settling the inter-State issue.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Asserting that constructing a new dam across Mullaperiyar to replace the 113-year old existing structure was inevitable, Kerala Government today earmarked Rs ten crore in its budget for a detailed study for it.

The Green Bench of the Kerala High Court, handling environmental cases, on Friday asked the Government not to demolish for another month the two check-dams the Tata Tea company had constructed at Lakshmi Estate and Chittivarai in Munnar. The stay ordered by the court became yet another victory for the corporate giant in its legal battle against the Kerala Government.
