Two years ago, over 1,500 farmers had volunteered to give up land for industry in Ausgram, Burdwan. Two days ago, officials who went to circulate a notice on cheque distribution there, were told to stay away.
Aug. 19: Contentious land issue triggered violent clashes between the police and the local villagers at Andal in Durgapur which left over a dozen people, including five policemen injured and three police vehicles gutted. The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is building a 1,000-MW hydel power project for which it needs 1,000-acre land. Nearly 700 acres have already been acquired.
The vehicular emissions are one of the potential sources of air pollution in Durgapur steel city. Statistical analysis is made on the population of the city to detect its effect on human health focused only on eye and nose irritations. Two parameters, namely mode of transport and travelling time are chosen for this analysis.
DURGAPUR, 14 JUNE: The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) has asked state-owned Durgapur Projects Limited to prevent pollution caused by its coke-oven plant by 21 June. If the company fails to follow the order within the stipulated timeframe, the plant would be closed down.
The authorisation for hazardous waste issued by the Board vide memo No.49/2S(HW)-1100/2001 dtd. 31.07.2007 is hereby extended for the period of up to 31.12.2009.
