TURA: The Meghalaya Government has given rewards of fifty thousand rupees each to twelve Garo villages in East Garo Hills district for successfully undertaking the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) of the central government achieving the target goal of hundred percent.
In these villages each household has a pucca latrine to prevent open defecation that results in the spread of diseases.
As high as 49 per cent of Meghalaya's population lives in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) margin while the East Garo Hills district has topped the BPL list in the state with 55.94 per cent families living in abject poverty. Official sources said here today that in the Jaintia Hills district, the number of such families registered was the least with only 33.51 per cent living below the poverty line. Similarly, the Ri-Bhoi district recorded 49.94 per cent of such families with altogether 32,590 households in the BPL list.
The Union Health Ministry has convened a meeting with the health directors of all the northeastern states at Guwahati on April 9 to discuss the outbreak of malaria in East Garo Hills district even before the onset of monsoon. At least 31 people have died of the disease in the past two weeks. A health officer confirmed that the meeting has been called to assess the situation in Garo Hills. The Union Health Ministry has identified malaria as endemic to the northeastern states. At least 16 per cent of malaria-related deaths in the country have been recorded from the region.
