Health hazard:The groundwater at Cauvery Nagar in Erode is polluted heavily following unmindful discharge of effluents into the vacant lands by the textile processing units.

ERODE: The Lower Bhavani Turn Irrigation Farmers Association have asked the Public Works Department to take immediate steps to carry out repairs and maintenance works in the water carrying channels of the Lower Bhavani Project. It claimed that a majority of the channels were heavily silted. The bunds were weak and the shutters needed immediate repairs.

Farmers blame district authorities for inaction

Foul odour:The dumping of solid waste, including huge amount of plastic waste in water carrying channels remains unchecked in many parts of Erode.

ERODE: State Planning Commission member G. Kumaravelu has appealed to farmers to cultivate crops such as bamboo in the lands which were polluted due to the discharge of effluents in the water carrying channels.

The mass cultivation of crops such as bamboo would help for the bio-remediation of polluted soil, he said while participating at a meeting held here on Tuesday.

ERODE: Communist Party of India State Secretary D. Pandian has urged the State Government to put an end to the discharge of effluents into the Kalingarayan canal.

ERODE: Erode MP A. Ganesha Murthi has appealed to the Central Government to declare Erode, Coimbatore and Tirupur districts as Special Zone for Organic Farming and initiate concerted efforts to promote the organic farm practices.

Many farmers in the three districts had taken up organic farming at a large scale. A majority of the people in the districts depend on agriculture for their income.

ERODE: The discharge of water into the Kalingarayan canal, a major irrigation channel in the district, has been stopped recently to give way for carrying out renovation and maintenance works. But the flow of effluents in the channel is yet to stop.

ERODE: The Tamizhaga Vivasyigal Sangam has asked the Forest Department to create adequate water sources for wild animals in reserve forests in the district.

With jungles in the district hit by drought, wild animals stray into human habitations and enter fields in search of water.
