GANGTOK: The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has said that the environment and bio-diversity in Sikkim have been threatened by construction of hydel power projects and absence of government safeguards.

Gangtok, April 25: The double-laning of NH31A, the lifeline of Sikkim, has hit a hurdle as the Bengal forest department has not yet granted permission to the Border Roads Organisation to work on the stretch that runs through Darjeeling district.

Urban Development and Housing Department, Government of Sikkim has entrusted DDF Consultants Pvt Ltd the work of the preparation of comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) for the capital town of Gangtok which is one of the towns eligible for central government financial assistance under JNNURM programme.

The Ministry of Tourism has identified Gangtok among the 29 destinations on the basis of footfalls and future potential in consultation with the concerned State Governments for development through mega projects.

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs 76.27 crore against the total project cost of Rs 85.71 crore for Sikkim for implementation of infrastructure projects under RIDF - XV.

The projects sanctioned relate to Rural Education Institutions (26 nos), Rural Drinking Water Schemes (8 nos) and Rural Roads (21 nos) in the four districts of Sikkim.

In an effort to assess the impact of global warming on this Himalayan State, the Sikkim Government has decided to set up 15 meteorological stations to record daily pattern of weather conditions here.
