As many as 50 people fell ill after drinking contaminated water at Arahunasi village in Ron taluk on Sunday.

People who drank water in the village complained of diarrhoea and a few among them were admitted to a nearby private hospital. The rest were admitted at Dr Bhimsen Joshi Government Hospital at Ron. Two of the victims were shifted to a hospital in Gadag. Though Arahunasi falls under Mallapura Gram Panchayat and has four Gram Panchayat members representing the village, cleanliness has taken a backseat.

Relief for Pallavaram Municipality

The Pallavaram Muncipality got some relief from the National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, on Thursday on the issue of dumping garbage. The Tribunal directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to make a spot inspection on the new site at Venkatamangalam mooted by the municipality and to accord ‘consent to establish’ without further delay.

Work on tackling a chronic problem relating to the pollution of the Ooty Lake, which has been defying a solution for long, started on Saturday with workers of the Public Works Department — Water Resources Organisation (PWD-WRO) getting into the Kodappamund channel. The channel, extending over about 2.9 kilometres, from Kodappamund at one end of the town to the Ooty Lake at the other end, has been identified as the main reason for the lake getting polluted.

Bengaluru: There seems to be no respite from the garbage crisis for citizens of Bengaluru as well as villagers of Mandur as city in-charge minister R. Ashok and Chief Min­ister Jagadish Shet­tar have so far not been able to come up with effective alternative steps.

The BBMP Commissioner, Siddaiah, has even hinted that alternate measures to tackle garbage would take at least three months to roll in and dumping of garbage at Mandur landfill might extend beyond February.

The High Court of Karnataka on Monday asked the residents of Bangalore to hold corporators and ward committee members responsible for uncleared garbage in their respective wards.

During the hearing of a batch of public interest litigations on the garbage crisis in the City, the Division Bench comprising Justices N Kumar and B V Nagarathna said ward committees headed by corporators have a greater role in addressing garbage problem.

Owing to the state government's slack response to garbage treatment problems at the city's dumping grounds, BMC has now decided to take matters into its own hands.
