Garbage is being burnt right inside the Dumane Garbage Treatment plant with CMC denying the activity, but a journo’s photographic evidence says it all

In a serious violation of environment and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms, massive tracts of land along the eco-senstive Juhu beach have now turned into a dumpyard and the civic administration

Built to prevent flooding, channel is now a garbage dump

Work on tackling a chronic problem relating to the pollution of the Ooty Lake, which has been defying a solution for long, started on Saturday with workers of the Public Works Department — Water Resources Organisation (PWD-WRO) getting into the Kodappamund channel. The channel, extending over about 2.9 kilometres, from Kodappamund at one end of the town to the Ooty Lake at the other end, has been identified as the main reason for the lake getting polluted.

Bengaluru: There seems to be no respite from the garbage crisis for citizens of Bengaluru as well as villagers of Mandur as city in-charge minister R. Ashok and Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar have so far not been able to come up with effective alternative steps.

The BBMP Commissioner, Siddaiah, has even hinted that alternate measures to tackle garbage would take at least three months to roll in and dumping of garbage at Mandur landfill might extend beyond February.

The waste generation in City has come down from 4,000 tonnes a day to 3,600 tonnes thanks to hoteliers who are disposing the waste themselves.

The BBMP took everyone by surprise when it submitted before the Karnataka High Court that the waste generation was 3,600 tonnes a day. Earlier, it had claimed that the waste generation was somewhere between 4,000 tonnes and 4,400 tonnes a day. Ananthaswamy, Chief Engineer, BBMP (Solid Waste Management) said the average waste generation had come down to 3,600 tonnes because of a series of measures taken by the Palike for scientific disposal of the waste.

The High Court of Karnataka on Monday asked the residents of Bangalore to hold corporators and ward committee members responsible for uncleared garbage in their respective wards.

During the hearing of a batch of public interest litigations on the garbage crisis in the City, the Division Bench comprising Justices N Kumar and B V Nagarathna said ward committees headed by corporators have a greater role in addressing garbage problem.

Owing to the state government's slack response to garbage treatment problems at the city's dumping grounds, BMC has now decided to take matters into its own hands.

KANPUR: Various areas of Ashok Nagar under Kalyanpur block are grappling with insanitary conditions for the past few months as Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has turned a blind eye towards the woes of this locality. The lanes here are flooded with sewage water and posing a serious health hazard.

A visit to these places presents a picture of utter neglect as majority of localities in Ashok Nagar are waterlogged even though there hasn't been any rainfall recently. Apart from sewage water, piles of garbage can be seen strewn around in these localities. The stagnant drains have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s Rochem Green plant to generate energy from waste will soon start generating 10 mega watt electricity.

"The plant currently uses 300 metric tonne waste to generate 3 mega watt electricity. It will soon upgraded to take 700 metric tonne waste to generate 10 mega watt electricity," said Suresh Jagtap, joint commissioner and incharge of municipal solid waste at PMC Pune city generates around 1,600 metric tonne garbage every day. Of which, waste to energy projects make use of 375 metric tonne waste.

New Delhi: With the government throwing its weight behind waste-to-energy (WTE) plants in this year’s Budget, a debate has started on the need for, and suitability of, such projects.
