CM Prithviraj Chavan announced Wednesday formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe financial irregularities and violation of norms by private contractors at the Deonar, Kanjurmarg and Mulund dumping grounds.

"Preliminary reports have established violation of norms by those awarded 25-year contracts to maintain the dumping grounds," he told the legislative assembly.

Uncovered vehicles transporting solid waste are a common sight in Kochi even as norms for collecting and disposing waste are continuously being flouted in many parts of the city.

Despite Corporation authorities giving an assurance in December last year that 40 fully automated pickup vehicles for collecting waste would ply in the city by March, the waste management system still remains the same.

THE Bombay High Court asked the Maharashtra government Monday to formulate an action plan for tackling the problem of illegal garbage dumping in state. The court also asked the government to submit an action plan on identifying and acquiring land for the same by Wednesday.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation will soon start using Global Positioning System (GPS) and other devices to monitor and improve implementation of the solid waste disposal system.

The proposal of “E-Municipality Solid Waste Disposal Monitoring System” was passed at a meeting of the Corporation’s Standing Committee on Thursday.
The system is being put in place in the wake of complaints that the auto tippers and trucks assigned to take solid waste and garbage from 64 wards of the East Corporation to sanitary land fill sites were not working properly.
