As many as 2,597 farmers committed suicide in the state between 2003 and 2010. The highest number of farmer suicides have been reported in Hassan in this period. Agriculture minister Umesh Katti furnished this information in the Legislative Council in response to a question raised by Congress member Khaji Arshad Ali.

In Hassan district 268 farmers committed suicide.
