Bhubaneswar: Orissa's multi-crore mining scam controversy has cast its shadow on the Central Task Force constituted by the Union ministry of mines to probe the illegularities in the state mining sector.

BELLARY: Santa Sheela Nair, Secretary, Union Ministry of Mines, has sought the intervention of S.V. Ranganath, Chief Secretary, government of Karnataka, and Vijai Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, New Delhi, to permit officials of the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) to enter the mines within the forest areas.

Taking strong exception to the alleged prevention of Central Government officials from inspecting illegal mines in Hospet in Bellary district, the Centre has directed Karnataka to allow them free access to all mines.

Strict legal action will be taken against those who are violating the law and are engaged in illegal sand mining, Tahsildar Dr Sudha has said.

She was addressing the media persons here on Tuesday.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday sought reply from the Centre, and others on a petition seeking implementations of the directions given by a state Lokayukta which pointed out large-scale illegal mining activities in the forest areas of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
