Protesting against an alleged polluting industrial unit in their town, around 200 residents of Kayalpatnam in Tuticorin district filed RTI petitions with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) here on Monday. They also met TNPCB officials and made representations with them.

Residents and members of the Kayalpatnam Environmental Protection Association (KEPA) alleged that the factory owned and operated by DCW Ltd at Sahupuram, had been flagrantly flouting environmental norms by releasing effluents into the sea.The factory manufactured caustic soda, liquid chlorine, beneficiated ilmenite and trichloroethylene, and PVC.

In the backdrop of receiving complaints by the general public over the dumping of waste at Modapadavu, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (Mangalore) has issued a show cause notice to Mangalore Refineries and Petro-chemicals Ltd on December 6.

The show cause notice has been served for non-compliance of consent conditions and violation of the Water and Air Acts of the Environment Protection Act 1986.

Jaipur: With TOI repeatedly highlighting the continued discharge of effluents into the Bandi river, the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB) on Sunday ordered closure of all textile units in Pali for the next two days.

“About 400 textile units have been told to remain shut for two days as there were reports of excess effluent generation and discharge by them into the Bandi river,” said O P Gupta, regional officer RSPCB, Pali. He said the Pali Water Pollution Control Research Foundation (PWPCRF) Trust will look at the effluents discharged from the industries and ensure that the norms are regulated. The PWPCRF is one of the very first co-operative pollution control bodies in the country and was initiated by the industry itself.
