RAMANATHAPURAM: Mystery shrouds the death of birds, including Pelicans, an endangered migratory species, at Sakkarakottai tank here.

Forest officials of Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park (GMMNP), ornithologists and veterinarians visited the spot on Sunday based on information that some birds were found dead in the tank.

The study reports the impact of migratory livestock in the buffer area of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The cumulative impacts of livestock grazing, fuel wood extraction and other anthropogenic pressures on forest cover in and around camping sites have been analyzed using satellite data and field observations.

As many as 65 species of water birds, including the ferruginous pochard and the black-tailed godwit, which are listed as nearly threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, were recorded in the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) that was recently carried out by Wetlands International, South Asia Division, in Delhi.
