Target missed by 6.5%, however it was raised by 16.71% over 2011-12

The Odisha government has missed its mining revenue target for 2012-13 by 6.5 per cent though it is higher by 16.71 per cent over 2011-12.
Mining revenue, the single biggest contributor to the state's non-tax revenue segment stood at Rs 5352.94 crore in 2012-13 as against a target of Rs 5700 crore. In 2011-12, the mining revenue collection was Rs 4586.64 crore.

MANDLA: Tiger corridors and its habitat around famous Kanha National Park is threatened by unabated mining of dolomite in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh- located 466 km south-east of Bhopal. Mining has reached to areas about 0 meters from the forest limits in some cases, said sources.

Mandla has one of the best quality dolomite reserves in the country and several mining companies are active in the area. While the forest department wants immediate closure of nearly 60 mines operating in the region, administrative officials have turned a blind eye to the proposal terming that mining operations will continue till expiry of lease. Mining permissions were issued before the new forest conservation Act came into force, say officers in the mining department.

Since quarrying resumed after a ban, prices go up by 40%

Public protest is mounting against the sky-rocketing price of granite products and the increase in granite quarrying activities in Wayanad district. Though the district administration had banned the functioning of quarries on revenue land for nearly seven months following a Supreme Court directive, quarrying was resumed nearly a fortnight ago with the State government intervening in the issue on the ground that the ban had adversely affected the construction sector in the district.

SHILLONG: UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh said that unscientific mining has continued to wreck havoc on the environment despite the State having come up with the Meghalaya Mines and Mineral Policy, 2012.

“Many of the rivers have been polluted due to the ongoing unscientific mining,” Lyngdoh said during Question Hour in the Assembly on Monday.

Moves afoot to form task force under the Revenue Department. The Industries Department is understood to have mooted a proposal for constituting a task force under the Mining and Geology Department to check the exploitation and transportation of metals and minerals.

An inter-ministerial committee of the Odisha government constituted to formulate a long-term ore linkage policy for local industries expects to submit its report soon. "The ministerial panel has heard the views of all stakeholders. We have discussed the pros and cons of the suggestions given by them. Our report will focus on a wide range of factors like availability of ore and its pricing. By the end of this month, we hope to submit the report," said Prasanna Acharya, finance minister and chairman of the inter-ministerial panel.

BHUBANESWAR: The M B Shah Commission, inquiring into illegal mining in Odisha, will resume hearing at its headquarters in Ahmedabad from Tuesday, official sources said.

The commission is slated to hear views of miners having lease to extract minerals from 57 mines on various violations and the contentious rule 37 of the Mineral Concession Rules, 1960, a government source here said.

BHOPAL: A mining plan cell has been constituted in Directorate of Geology and Mining. Superintendent Geology NK Hans has been appointed as the in-charge of the cell constituted to give recognition to qualified persons.

According to authorities, the cell will accord recognition to persons qualified to prepare mining plan as per amendments made to Madhya Pradesh Minor Minerals Rules-1996. Recognition will be given by Directorate of Geology and Mining.
