MUMBAI: The Tata Power Company Limited, one of the largest integrated private power utilities, on Monday announced the commercial operation of its new 250-MW Unit 8 at its Trombay thermal power station. The commissioning of the unit promises to bridge the increasing demand-and-supply gap of power for the city.

MUMBAI: To tackle the shortfall of electricty during summer, the state government is likely to buy electricity from the open market.

A key functionary of the Democratic Front government said the proposal to buy 500 MW would be passed in the cabinet meeting to be held on Friday.

At present, the state has a shortfall of 4,000 MW daily and the demand for power increases in the summer.

India is rapidly developing wind energy resources to satisfy its growing needs for electricity. However, the suitability of a particular location for the development of a wind energy project depends on a large number of factors.

In an attempt to make the IIT Bombay campus energy efficient, an energy audit of the institute was recently conducted to identify and suggest measures for conservation. The recommendations, if implemented, can bring about a total saving of around Rs1.75 crore per year, the report said.
