HOWRAGHAT, Aug 30 – Timber smugglers have been holding sway in Karbi Anglong reserve forests. Illegal trade in timbers has been going unabated in the Karbi Anglong district.

Nagaon, June 20: Thirty sugarcane cultivators of Ujoragaon, a village located 15km from the district headquarters, today asked Dispur to resume construction of the 30-bed hospital for which they had donated four hectares 21 years ago or return their land.

The Assam government has drafted an ambitious plan to introduce cultivation of jatropha (Jatropha curcas ) to help farmers boost their income, and also to produce bio-diesel.

The state agriculture department last week organised a day-long training workshop for farmers and NGOs working in rural areas to popularise the crop.

Jorhat, March 2: In a bid to provide irrigation facilities to farmers living in the foothills of Assam, the state agriculture department has initiated a pilot project under which sprinklers would be installed to water the fields.

The Rs 68-lakh irrigation project will be implemented in 50 units spread over Dhemaji, Jorhat, Nagaon, Kamrup and Kokrajhar districts.

A ranger at Orang National Park, Salim Ahmed, was injured when he was attacked by a rhino at Islampur, about 7km from the park, at 2pm today.

The rhino had strayed out of the park two days back and crossed the Brahmaputra to areas in Nagaon and Morigaon districts

Nearly 1,000 colour charts will be distributed among the farmers of the district under the centrally sponsored National Food Security Mission (NFSM).
