NAGAON, March 14: The National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme was introduced in Nagaon district including Barhampur, Kathiatoli and Khagarijan Development Block under the Barhampur LAC since the year 2007.

With an increased fish production in the past few years, the State aims to become self-sufficient in producing fish in next few years. Assam produced 2.06 lakh metric ton fish against a requirement of 2.26 lakh metric ton in 2008-09.

With speeding vehicles killing 55 wild animals on an average each year, the Assam PWD is undertaking a feasibility study for diverting traffic from the 100 km stretch of the NH-37 which passes through the Kaziranga National Park, reports PTI.

The efforts of the State to overcome the adverse impact of the drought-like situation have perhaps bearing fruits. About 88 per cent of the targeted 18 lakh hectares of sali paddy area of the State has so far been covered with seedling transplantation. It is expected that the State will at the most be able to cover 90 per cent of the targeted sali area by the end of the current month.

The overall rainfall deficit of the State has decreased further to 12 per cent. However, Nagaon and Hailakandi districts have been facing 68 per cent and 67 per cent of deficit in this regard. But, Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Tinsukia districts have been witnessing surplus rainfall this monsoon amounting to 56 per cent, five per cent and one per cent respectively.
