The Planning Commission has proposed a slew of changes in the prevalent duty structure for the petrochemical industry for the new Plan period (2012-17).

To begin with, it has urged the central government to establish single national level value-added tax (VAT)/ goods and services tax (GST) on plastic and articles of states at a uniform four per cent. This could include prime petrochemical feedstock, naphtha and natural gas.

The beleagured Haldia Petrochemical Ltd (HPL) has got a breather with the Centre waiving the duty imposed on imports of naphtha, HPL's feedstock.

KOCHI: A major mishap was averted after a leak of highly inflammable naphtha from a tanker, bound for NTPC plant in Cheppad, was detected at the Ernakulam South railway station on Tuesday.

The leak in the valve was detected in the afternoon. This resulted in disruption of train traffic for about one hour.

HALDIA, 2 FEB : Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL) has completed its Supermax project by augmenting ethylene capacity, and is ready to reopen shortly, after a three-month expansion shutdown.

The naphtha cracker has been shut since November 2009 to commission the Rs 1230 crore Supermax project, aiming to increase ethylene capacity from 520,000 tpa to 670,000 tpa.

The Union Budget proposal for re-imposition of five per cent import duty on naphtha for petrochemical production seems to have found its single largest casualty in West Bengal government-promoted Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL). HPL is reportedly the only major standalone petrochemical facility using naphtha as feedstock. The showpiece industrial project of the State Government estimates a Rs 300-crore hit on bottomline
