Gandhinagar, 21 March: Janata Dal(U) Gujarat unit chief Mr Chhotubhai Vasava has been charged with encroaching on 800 acres of land, given to the Narmada project affected people, in Bharuch district, government officials said.

Specialist of ecology of rivers Michael Barber has said that the rivers could not be kept healthy if we ignore the chief reasons behind the pollution in rivers. He further added that the pollution should be seen in the context of the entire basin of the rivers, without considering it the pollution of the rivers could not be ameliorated.

Given the tardy pace of work under Narmada Phase III, it seems unlikely that the benefit of Narmada phase III will reach the city people this summer.

The second International River Festival at Bandra Bhan, near the confluence of Rivers Narmada and Tawa in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, would be held from March 21 to 23. About 600 environmentalists, social workers, economists, agriculture scientists, doctors, teachers and students are expected to join this event.

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has represented to Government of India to ask Narmada Control Authority (NCA) to allow raising the height of the Narmada dam from 12.92 metres, stationary since December 2006, to full reservoir level (FRL) of 138.68 metres.

Ahmedabad: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is conducting a feasibility study on upgradation of the six-km-long four-lane bridge over Narmada river into six lanes. The bridge falls on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and is known for frequent traffic jams.
