The Maharashtra Forest Department has given its nod for the widening of the National Highway 7 stretch that passes within the eco-sensitive zone of Pench National Park.

The Planning Commission is contemplating a proposal to give special weight to the domestic infrastructure companies over their foreign counterparts for their experience in construction projects in the country.

This comes in the face of domestic infrastructure companies accusing the central government of giving preference to the foreign companies through the new eligibility norms in awarding contracts.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has embarked on a grand project of four- and/or six-laning of the existing roads to a target of 14,000 km, especially the east-west and north-south corridors. This is a good thing because the country needs proper roads for its development and road construction provides employment. This aspect of development, nevertheless, is also harmful if not managed carefully, because road development requires the basic ingredient of land. People may be displaced or otherwise adversely affected due to land acquisition. (Letters)

The stretch between Barasat in North 24 Parganas and Dalkhola in North Dinajpur will be widenend to four lanes. "Provisions are being kept to turn it into a six-lane road in future. The land acquisition is being made with an eye to achieving the goal,' said Srikumar Bhattacharya, the project director of the NHAI here.

New Delhi: After years of being caught in red tape, the estimated Rs 340-crore Badarpur-Faridabad flyover may finally see the light of day. On Wednesday, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) awarded the contract to Hindustan Construction Company Limited for the 4.4-km elevated, signal-free corridor, which will be made on BOT basis.
