Deal comes days before Mayawati's visit

LUCKNOW: The farmers' agitation over the compensation for acquired land and the death of five of their kinsmen in police firing in Ghorhi Bachhedha village in Greater Noida (Gautam Budhha Nagar district), Uttar Pradesh, was withdrawn on Wednesday.

Greater Noida: The conflict between the residents of Ghori Bachhera village and Noida police and administration, seems to have blown over after a team of farmers met UP cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday evening.
The Ghori Bachhera representatives reportedly agreed to a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each of the five deceased who were killed in the police firing recently. This is, significantly, the first official admission that five farmers were killed in the confrontation of August 13, rather than the four the police had initially claimed.

A clinic in a village makes a difference even if the village happens to be Sakhipur in Greater Noida, within a stone's throw of New Delhi. The clinic, started by LG Electronics, opens in the morning. Patients come from 25 villages. One of them says: "The sarkari dispensary has been here for two years." The villagers are yet to realise that the clinic is run by a private company. A senior official of the company was shocked to know that the villagers don't know that LG runs the clinic. The villagers obviously cannot read the signboards.

Going by that trend, residents of East Delhi are the happiest lot. And that is not surprising given the fact the area has the best groundwater levels and a direct supply from the Ganga. With the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant commissioned, the area today faces hardly any shortage.

The ministry has spiked the sectoral regulator's decision de-recognising IGL's projects in the Capital, saying the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board does not have powers to judge entities set up through government orders before it came into existence.

As more vehicles turn to CNG, the number of filling stations is proving to be inadequate Spiralling prices of crude oil are ringing alarm bells for the green fuel policy in the Capital. As more and more private vehicle owners switch to CNG and the government makes CNG mandatory for different categories of vehicles, the city is falling way short of the demand. Long queues at CNG filling stations mean one thing: the city needs an immediate augmentation of capacity. And it needs it fast.

Officegoers were caught completely unawares on Wednesday morning when the sky darkened within minutes and a squall lashed the city and its neighbouring areas at a speed of over 100 kmph. The storm uprooted scores of trees and electricity poles and brought down roofs and walls of houses taking a toll of at least five lives in the city.
