ERODE: A total of 14 tannery units and 426 textile processing units that were found discharging huge amount of untreated effluents in water sources in Erode block had been shut down during the last three years by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB). Out of the 426 textile processing units, 185 were dyeing factories, 153, bleaching units and 88 were printing units.

The Department of Environment (DoE) fined four factories over Tk 43 lakh yesterday for dumping untreated wastes into the Bangshai river in Savar.

In a special drive, DoE officials found the four factories -- Anlima Yarn Dyeing Ltd, Blue Text Netware Ltd, Abedin Textile Mills and FKN Printing Mills -- dumping chemical mixed water into the river on the outskirt of the capital.

The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined three dyeing factories in Narayanganj Tk 70 lakh and ordered to stop production and set up effluent treatment plant (ETP) by June.

During a drive at Fatullah, the DoE team found gross violation of government instructions for setting up ETP, and the factories discharging liquid waste directly into the Buriganga.
