Ahmedabad: Pollution control vessel, a dedicated oil spill recovery vessel, second of its class in Asia-Pacific region, will be commissioned by Indian Coast Guard in Surat on July 20. The 94-metre-long vessel with displacement of 3,300 tonnes is a highly specialized ship fitted with top-of-shelf technologically advance pollution response equipment and is capable of recovering and neutralizing different kinds of oil spills in the sea.

The vessel boasts of an integrated platform management system, a perfect example of human machine interface. It interfaces the main machinery, sensors and equipment onboard the ship, which can be operated and monitored from a remote location. Automation is the keyword for this system.

The Vellore Citizens Welfare Forum (VCWF) has urged the State Minister for Environment to change the nomenclature of the Environment Policy as `Protection of Environment, Ecology, Biodiversity, Eco-systems, Prevention of Pollution and Enforcement of Statutory and Judicial Orders of Apex and Other Courts in India Policy’.

In a letter addressed to the Environment Minister, the honorary secretary of VCWF P.S. Subrahmanian said that the VCWF opposed the term ‘Environment Policy’ since it was very limited in its meaning, scope and definition. Therefore, the name of the policy should be changed as above.

As many as 708 challans were issued and eight vehicles impounded by the Transport Department of the Delhi Government on Monday, the first day of its week-long drive to check compliance with regard to pollution under control (PUC) certificates by all types of vehicles.

Stating that the drive would continue up to June 18, the Department said 30 enforcement teams have been deployed in various parts of the city to check the PUC certificates.

Though the district level coordination committee directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to register cases with the police against the owners of illegal textile processing units and those who rented their land for establishment of such units, not a single case has been filed so far.

The committee, established based on the directions of the Madras High Court, had give clear instructions to the TNPCB authorities a few weeks ago, asking them to file complaints so that the police could initiate criminal action against those running illegal textile processing units and those providing their lands for such units.
