Bangalore: Even as Orissa keeps dragging its feet over land acquisition for mega steel plant project, the Karnataka government has agreed to grant ArcelorMittal and Posco the required land for setting up steel plants on a 10-year lease.

BHUSHAN Steel will spend Rs 28,000 crore to build a 6 lakh tonnes steel plant in the Bellary region of Karnataka, a place other large steelmakers, including ArcelorMittal and Posco are also eyeing to build steel projects.

An organisation of villagers facing displacement for Posco steel project site near here today burnt copies of the rehabilitation package issued by the company.

South Korean steel giant Posco today said it is hopeful of getting about 4,000 acres of land soon for setting up its proposed Rs 54,000-crore steel project in Orissa.

"Things are moving on the ground and we are hopeful of getting the possession of land from government to start construction," Posco General Manager External Affair Simanta Mohanty told PTI.

BHUBANESWAR: In another setback to the beleaguered Posco project, the people who will be displaced when the South Korean steel major sets up a $12 billion steel plant have rejected the rehabilitation and compensation package offered to them.

The anti-Posco agitation, which is headed by Posco Pratirodha Samiti, burnt copies of the package Sunday.

The Orissa government on Thursday dismissed the speculation that South Korean steel major Posco was planning to shift its proposed 12-milliontonne steel project to Kulti in West Bengal.
