Korean steel giant is fed up over delay in land acquisition

South Korean steel giant Posco has called off its decision to invest Rs 32,300 crore to set up a six-million-tonne-per-annum steel plant in Karnataka. The decision follows prolonged delay in the acquisition of land by the state government at Halligudi, in Gadag district.

The court had pulled up the MoEF for issuing the order following a faulty procedure

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) , which had suspended the environment clearance for Posco's proposed steel plant near Paradip in March last year, will take up final hearing on the matter on August 12.

The measures will be implemented at a cost of Rs 44 cr

The Jagatsinghpur district administration is all set to implement cyclone mitigation measures (CMM) at the site of the Posco project for protection against natural disasters and saline inundation. These measures will be implemented at a cost of Rs 44 crore.

Even as the Orissa government acquired 2,700 acres of land for phase I of Posco’s proposed steel plant near Paradip on July 4, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) has raised a few questions.

District administration acquires 2,700 acres for steel project

In what is being seen as a milestone for Posco’s proposed mega steel project near Paradip, Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district administration has completed the acquisition of 2,700 acres required for its first phase.

Odisha government continued the final phase of land acquisition for proposed steel plant POSCO in Jagatsinghpur district on Wednesday despite strong protest from the locals.

The labourers engaged by the district administration went on demolishing the betel vines to acquire land as armed policemen beat up a few farmers who came out to protect their vineyards to save their source of livelihood.

The villagers had intensified their stir during last few days and vowed not to hand over 'a single inch of land' to the Jagatsinghpur administration

Many anti-Posco villagers, who had been agitating against land acquisition for the mega steel plant of the South Korean firm, today retracted their steps as they lined up near their betel vines in Gobindpur village, near Paradip, to hand over their vines to the district administration to make way for the setting up of the project.
