Chandigarh: Water woes in Haryana have further deepened. As if deficient rainfall was not enough, the water table has registered a substantial fall of half a metre since last year while it has dipped by nearly three metres in certain pockets of the state.

Though the water table has shown a marginal rise in a few areas, the increase is limited to districts plagued with saline water.

May be worst drought in 100 years, warns CM

In spite of the monsoon season still prevailing State Government has declared 37 districts drought-affected. This is the first instance in Madhya Pradesh when in spite of the prevailing monsoon season districts have been declared drought-hit.

Anticipating difficult times ahead, the State Agriculture Department has readied a proposal worth over Rs 550 crore to help farmers tide over a situation created by deficit rainfall. If accepted, the proposal that has been submitted to the State Revenue Department could be a lifeline for farmers who have already been affected by dry spells, which have only recently been interrupted by rains

The overall rainfall deficit of the State has decreased further to 12 per cent. However, Nagaon and Hailakandi districts have been facing 68 per cent and 67 per cent of deficit in this regard. But, Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Tinsukia districts have been witnessing surplus rainfall this monsoon amounting to 56 per cent, five per cent and one per cent respectively.
