The Division Bench of Mr Mohit S Shah, Chief Justice and Mr Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta of Calcutta High Court today directed the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) to take people from other departments to monitor the checking of automobile pollution level during night hours.

The Urban Administration and Development Department has so far insured more than 32 thousand cycle rickshaw and handcart pullers under the Chief Minister's Cycle Rickshaw and Handcart Pullers' Welfare Scheme. The insured persons include only those to whom the urban bodies have issued identity cards after survey.

Cycle-rickshaw is considered an economical and comfortable medium of transport for the common man in small as well as big cities. But there are 15 districts in the state where cycle-rickshaws are not prevalent either due to geographical conditions or congested population. These include such big cities as Bhopal and Indore and smaller ones like Raisen, Harda, Shajapur etc.

The solar-powered rickshaws, launched amid much fanfare last year, are gathering dust. The rickshaw pullers, who were allotted these rickshaws, have given them back to the Municipal Corporation.
