Facilities involved in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products are an under-investigated source of pharmaceuticals to the environment. Between 2004 and 2009, 35 to 38 effluent samples were collected from each of three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in New York and analyzed for seven pharmaceuticals including opioids and muscle relaxants. Two WWTPs (NY2 and NY3) receive substantial flows (>20% of plant flow) from pharmaceutical formulation facilities (PFF) and one (NY1) receives no PFF flow.

Acting swiftly on the complaints of local villagers, the state pollution control board today issued a show-cause notice to the Wildflower Hall hotel of the Oberoi chain on the outskirts of the city for flouting environmental norms and contaminating natural water sources by discharging partially treated sewage effluent into a nearby nullah.

Paving way for what is being seen as a ong-term solution to the pollution in the Yamuna iver due to untreated sewage disposal, the Union Cabinet Committee on nfrastructure on Wednesday cleared the pro ect for laying interceptor sewer along the three main drains of the city Najafgarh, Supplementary (running almost parallel to Najafgarh drain) and the Shahdara drain.

The Union Cabinet Committee on Wednesday approved the ambitious Rs 1,357-crore Yamuna cleaning Interceptor Sewer project of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). In what is termed as the largest fund approval for Delhi under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the project was cleared after extensive examination by the ministries concerned.

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has admitted that the sewage of Chandigarh and Mohali was being discharged into the seasonal N-choe, which originates from Chandigarh and passes through various parts of the city before reaching Mohali.

Chandigarh: As a part of river conservation project, the union ministry of environment and forests on Thursday cleared a proposal for laying sewage disposal pipes, and provision of sewage treatment plants in eight more towns of Punjab. These are Hoshiarpur, Phagwara South, Rajpura, Patran, Lehraghaga, Derabassi, Khanuri and Jalandhar. The project will be taken up at a cost of Rs 465.07 crore.
