Saturday will prove to be a milestone in the field of renewable energy production as Reliance Energy will start power generation of 40MW from its solar energy power project in Rajasthan. This is first solar power project in the private sector.

Chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Union minister for new and renewable energy Farooq Abdullah, state energy minister Dr Jitendra Singh and Reliance Energy owner Anil Ambani, including other personalities will be present during the inaugural function of the solar power project at Dhudsar village,

Should solar thermal be preferred over photovoltaic solar power ? Concentrated solar power (CSP) or solar thermal technology is to be given substantial allocation in the second phase of the national solar mission (2013-2017). This was revealed by the joint secretary in the ministry of new and renewable energy, Tarun Kapoor, at the third concentrated solar thermal power summit on March 14, organised in Gurgaon. He stated that detailed plans would be revealed in the next few months. At the same time he admonished the industry.

Says cost of production has come down considerably. S. Ratnakumar, energy expert and Managing Director of Kerala State Cooperative Rubber Marketing Federation Limited, has said that given the present technological advancement, scientists are hopeful that solar power will reach the grid parity in the country by 2017.

Talking on the subject “Renewable energy: sustainable options for the future” at a seminar on “Electricity management and regulation” organised by the TKM Institute of Technology here on Sunday, Mr. Ratnakumar said even wind power was fast nearing grid parity

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has proposed capital cost of Rs 5.75 crore per Mw for wind energy projects. The proposal is a part of the regulations the commission released recently and will be used to determine tariff of renewable energy for 2012-17.

The power regulator has proposed a loan tenure of 12 years for determination of tariff, annual depreciation rate of 5.83 per cent for the first 12 years of the tariff period and the rest of the depreciation to be spread over the remaining useful life of the project from the 13th year.

These regulations may be called the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (Terms and Conditions for Tariff determination from Renewable Energy Sources) Regulations, 2012.
