NAGAPATTINAM: The authorities of the famous Velankanni church (Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health) on Tuesday launched a solid waste management project at a cost of Rs. 1 crore in the campus to maintain hygiene and public health as lakhs of pilgrims from various parts of the country visit the church throughout the year.

Environment activist Subhash Dutta has written to the chief election commissioner, urging him to ask parties to abide by green norms during the campaign.

Dutta said that unless green norms were followed, the polls would leave in their wake around 1 lakh metric tonnes of non-biodegradable waste that would add to the pollution.

Mumbai The Centre has cleared a garbage processing and disposal project at the Kanjurmarg landfill site, paving the way for the BMC to scientifically decompose 4,000 metric tonne of waste a day in the 65-hectare-plot.

The civic administration had been facing problems in getting approval for the project owing to the location of the site in the CRZ and the presence of mangroves.
