Shillong, July 19: The hopes of rescuing the 15 miners who were reportedly trapped inside a coal mine since July 6 in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills is receding with every passing day.

SHILLONG: Close on the heels of the mining tragedy in Garo Hills region of the State where 15 miners lost their lives inside a rat hole mine in Rongsa Awe village in South Garo Hills, questions regarding the safety and security measures in place in these mines have cropped up.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, a senior police official from Garo Hills, on condition of anonymity, said safety and security measures are expected in mines that are extracting minerals in a scientific manner.

Shillong: At least 10 workers were feared dead in a coalpit in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district because of unscientific mining.

SHILLONG: The State Government is contemplating to come up with an Executive Order (EO) to hold mine owners responsible for any untoward incidents that might occur inside mining areas owned by them.

“We would soon come with the Executive Order as the Government is concerned over the lack of safety norms in mining areas across the State which is posing a serious threat to the life of the thousands of labourers who are working in these mines,” Deputy Chief Minister Bindo Mathew Lanong and in charge Mining and Geology said here on Thursday.

SHILLONG: Taking cognizance over malpractices prevailing in the Public Distribution System (PDS) in the State, the Government is planning to computerize the whole system to check the malaise.

To achieve this objective, the State Government has already submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) amounting to Rs 43 crore for computerization of the Public Distribution System (PDS) to the Central Government.

Three coal miners including the owner of the mine died in remote Siju area of South Garo Hills after inhaling toxic fumes while attempting to extract the mineral, a delayed report said.

TURA: An attempt to extract coal from a used mine shaft in Siju area of South Garo Hills proved disastrous for a group of locals when three of them reportedly lost their lives after inhaling toxic fumes deep inside the coal pit several hundred feet below the surface of the ground. Among the dead was the owner of the mine.
