The High Court on Thursday set a deadline of two weeks for the Karnataka government and BBMP to submit a status report on steps taken to tackle the garbage menace in Bangalore. Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by city-based advocate G R Mohan, seeking supersession of the BBMP for its failure to act on the garbage disposal issue, the division bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B V Nagarathna mentioned specific steps to be followed in dealing with garbage disposal.

Huge quantities of plastic covers, cups seized

Officials led by Kolar City Municipal Council Commissioner Mahendra Kumar on Thursday conducted surprise raids on shops in prominent commercial areas of the city and seized plastic covers and cups of less than 40 micron thickness. Raids were conducted on shops, bakeries, restaurants, godowns and other business establishments situated in Doddapet, Kalamma Temple Street and in front of the new bus stand. Officials seized two tractor-trailer loads of plastic material, which were of less than 40 micron thickness. The officials levied a fine of over Rs 15,000 on eight restaurants and 25 shops for violating the norm.

Solid waste produced in Tamil Nadu a day could be put to use for generating electricity, said N.Ramachandran, Vice Chanellor, Periyar Maniammai University (PMU), on Tuesday.

At the two-day workshop on municipal solid waste for renewable energy production at PMU, Mr. Ramachandran said 12,504 tonnes of solid waste is produced in the State a day. This could help in generating 250 MW of power.

PANJIM: The public sector Sanjivani Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd, has decided to ask the State government for funds to install online air ambient quality monitoring system, in the wake of a show cause notice issued to it by Goa State Pollution Control Board for failure to install such systems.

The sugar factory officials during their hearing before GSPCB on Wednesday said that a proposal would be put up before government seeking financial assistance for installation of the system. The factory has been given one month time to complete the installation.

PANJIM: Syngenta India Limited, Corlim, and three other steel companies have agreed to install online stack emission, effluent and ambient air quality monitoring system, bringing the total number of companies which have agreed to comply, to eight, since Monday.

While the steel production units- Shrithik Ispat, Shraddha Ispat Private Limited, and Ambey Metallic Limited have agreed to install the system and asked for four-five month time, Syngenta India Limited has sought time till August 2013 to comply.
