A total 10 illegal dyeing units that were polluting water bodies and River Cauvery at villages near Pallipalayam in Tiruchengode Taluk, were demolished during a raid that was conducted there on Wednesday.

The eviction drive was jointly organised by officials of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), TANGEDCO and Police at Aavathipalayam, Manalmedu and Samayasangili near Pallipalayam.

The joint team of State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) and the district administration on Monday visited the Lajkura open cast project of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL).

The Coimbatore Corporation has not submitted Form II to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), in which it has to mention details about its solid waste management project.

The TNPCB has said this in response to a Right To Information query filed by V. Eswaran, the district secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Submission of Form II, according to the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, is mandatory.

The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board is vexed over the rampant burning of household trash in personal backyards in complete violation of instructions from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

Pollution control experts say that when household garbage is burnt, Dioxins, a known carcinogen, associated also with birth defects, are released into the air we inhale. Dioxins are impossible to be removed from the food chain since these are Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxins (PBTs) which enter plants through air and water, then cattle and poultry, and finally, humans.

Shimla: The high court has laid down guidelines for establishment of stone-crushing units to maintain ecological balance in the state.

Though the district level coordination committee directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to register cases with the police against the owners of illegal textile processing units and those who rented their land for establishment of such units, not a single case has been filed so far.

The committee, established based on the directions of the Madras High Court, had give clear instructions to the TNPCB authorities a few weeks ago, asking them to file complaints so that the police could initiate criminal action against those running illegal textile processing units and those providing their lands for such units.

The steel industry, if it chooses to ignore this index, will be an outlier.

Colour of water turned black and acidic smell emanated

While people in the world observing the World Environment Day and discussing measures to protect the Earth on Tuesday, it is business as usual for many textile processing and tannery units in Erode district. A few textile processing and tannery units located in BP Agraharam and its nearby areas dumped huge amount of untreated, toxic effluents in a water carrying channel that flows into Cauvery River. The colour of the water turned black in the channel and the acidic smell emanated from the effluents.
