The storm that lashed different parts of Malda district yesterday has destroyed mango worth over Rs 15 crore, spoiling completely a season that had already been hit by rainless months.

Aruru, Chikkapailagurki, Pillagundahalli, Shettigere and surrounding villages are the worst hit as grapes, paddy, vegetables and other crops were damaged due to heavy rain and hailstorm.

A sudden hailstorm and thundershowers on Sundaynight wrecked havoc in many villages in Chikkaballapur taluk, causing damage to the assets worth lakhs of rupees.

Rainstorm on Friday afternoon wrecked havoc in Arahalli village at Kolar taluk, causing damage of property to the tune of Rs 15 lakh.

Several houses, sericulture sheds and trees were damaged following heavy rains with storm that lashed the village for nearly three hours.

Chikkaballapur:
The farmers in Chikkaballapur taluk are facing crop damages to the tune of crores of rupees, due to hailstorm for the last two days. Several vineyards and vegetables have been completely destroyed in the taluk.

Bangladesh authorities reopened ports on Saturday and hundreds of thousands of people headed home after a cyclonic storm crossed the coast causing less damage than feared, officials said.

Cyclone Bijli hit the Cox'sbazar and Chittagong coasts with a maximum windspeed of 90 kilometres an hour at 7:30 PM last night.

The cyclone was crossing the costal areas when the report filed late last night.

The tsunami of December 26, 2004, devastated many coastal areas in Sri Lanka. Curiously, the tsunami spared several areas which had mangroves - dense forests of salt-resistant trees and shrubs that grow in brackish, low-lying coastal swamps in the tropics and subtropics.

The National Disaster Management Authority, New Delhi, and the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata, today issued a caution stating that a cyclonic storm could hit coastal parts of the state in the next 48 hours.
