Cattle Breeding Farm in Thanjavur facing staff shortage

THANJAVUR: Exotic Cattle Breeding Farm at Eachankottai in Thanjavur district is in the forefront of producing frozen semen straws for artificial insemination.

Farm sources here said that during 2008-2009, the farm produced nearly eleven lakh straws and this year also equal number of straws will be produced.

1440 work to be taken up under NREGP : Collector

THANJAVUR: A sum of Rs.47.35 crore has been allotted for the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) for the year 2009-10 to Thanjavur district, according to the Collector M.S. Shanmugham.

THANJAVUR: A seminar on profitable fish farming was jointly organised by Americal Soyabean Association Marketing (ASA-IM), Sustainable Research Foundation, Maanal Fish Farm and Everest Aqua Tech at Orathanadu, 20 km from here on Monday.

About 120 fish farmers from Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts participated in the seminar, said a press release issued here on Tuesday.

THANJAVUR: Thanjavur Municipality has taken up construction of a concrete bridge to take the drinking water pipeline across Kollidam river at Thirumanur pumping station near Thanjavur.

THANJAVUR: Pulses cultivation is picking up in Thanjavur district. Black gram and green gram have been raised so far on 20,000 hectares in the district. The plan, according to agriculture department officials, is to raise pulses on 45,000 hectares.

There are 15 distilleries in Tamil Nadu under operation. The distillery effluent (mainly spent wash) is dark brown in colour and acidic in nature. It contains high percentage of dissolved organic, inorganic matter and potassium. Till year 2000 these units had disposed the partly treated effluent on land as fertilizer and stored in lined lagoon for solar evaporation.

CHENNAI: The CPI (M) on Tuesday made a strong case for effective implementation of the rainwater harvesting programme, a mega plan to desilt hundreds of lakes, including the Veeranam lake in Cuddalore, and drainage systems for Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts to prevent floods.
