Greens Seek Compensatory Planting Drive

The public works department’s (PWD) plans to cut down trees for widening Main Central Road (MC Road) – connecting Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram – have run into trouble as environmentalists have come out against the move demanding implementation of compensatory tree planting programme or announcing a project to replant uprooted trees.

District Collector Biju Prabhakar has warned of strict action against those who violate sound pollution norms after obtaining licence from the police to use loudspeakers.

In an official release here on Wednesday, Mr. Prabhakar said directives to act against such persons had been issued following complaints from students preparing for examinations, critically ill persons, and the elderly who were suffering owing to uncontrolled noise pollution in their surroundings.

The road was built without clearance under CRZ norms

The State government will tender an apology to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for constructing a road for the proposed Vizhinjam port without clearance under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) regulations.

The annual event was held from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. in wetlands, forests, and villages in and around Thiruvananthapuram. The total count (149) was lower than the 2012 figure of 157. The count from each site also fell, with a variation of around 10.
