Udhagamandalam: A wild elephant is battling for life near here and those who have seen it or heard about its plight are hoping that death would come to its rescue soon.

The forest authorities have employed around 450 officials in Rajasthan's Sariska Tiger Reserve to under take the census. The census, which began on Thursday will end on 18 May. The first phase of the census has been dedicated to record pug marks of tiger and panthers and it will be completed on May 11.

KATTAPPANA: Preparations have begun at the Periyar Tiger Reserve and the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary for a State-wide wildlife survey to be held from May 18 to 20.

Sanjayan Kumar, deputy director, Periyar Tiger Reserve, told The Hindu on Thursday that training classes for the Forest Department staff would be held on Saturday, and the exact number of persons participating in the survey of mammals

JAIPUR: The forest department on Thursday began the census at Sariska tiger reserve despite knowing that there are just five tigers at the reserve. The same will commence at Ranthambore two days later.

While 150 persons would be involved in the fortnight-long exercise at Sariska, Ranthambore will see 600 people including staff, forest guards, NGOs and wildlife lovers participate in it.

LUCKNOW: The Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) might release the report on effective management of the tiger reserves in the second week of May. The committees, which were set up to evaluate the five cluster of reserves have submitted their report to the ministry.

All 39 reserves of the country were clubbed according to region and state into five clusters.
