KOLKATA, Mach 31: In a new twist to recent controversies surrounding the phasing out of two-stroke autorickshaws in order to bring down the pollution levels, the public vehicles department (PVD) has found out that 17,000 autorickshaws were being plied in the city without valid documents.

State home secretary Ardhendu Sen met advocate-general Balai Ray on Monday to discuss the status report on the two-stroke autorickshaw ban that the government will place in the high court on January 27.
The government is set to move court on Friday seeking a combined deadline to phase out the two-stroke autos that should have gone by December 31 and replace all old commercial vehicles that are supposed to go by March 31.
