Public Health Officials confirmed an outbreak of chikungunya and dengue in DJ Halli, revealing that a staggering 70 per cent of the residents in the area were affected by the vector-borne diseases.

Amongst the samples sent from the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Kaval Byrasandra, two tested positive for chikungunya and one for dengue.

Chikungunya fever struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in July 2006. Around 450 patients were attended to at the hospitals in the area, with many old patients revisiting to get their dose of Paracetamol. The hospitals have, however, stopped providing injections to avoid further pain to the patient and are prescribing only tablets.

A significant reduction in malaria deaths through targeted intervention measures, particularly in Africa, and a substantial rise in funding to fight the scourge have brought the goal of elimination of the disease nearer.

Chikungunya outbreak in DJ Halli is getting worse. Of the 450 suspected chikungunya cases treated at the DJ Halli hospital since Saturday, 165 cases were reported on Wednesday alone. Many of these cases are reported to have been confirmed.
