Kattappana grama panchayat president Johny Kulampilly has said that solid waste treatment has been given prime importance in the current budget that was passed on Saturday. He said waste accumulation was a major issue in the town and the focus was to treat the waste generated at the source itself.

Household waste generate problems in the panchayat and waste that is dumped by the business shops and slaughter houses are polluting the main river which is the prime source for drinking water in the town and adjoining areas.

Even as Thrikkakara attracts more people on account of its rising profile as the Information Technology hub, the municipal authorities are grappling with rising solid waste generation it entails.

However, the municipal authorities are talking in different voices when it comes to waste management, which was visible during the recent Budget.
In the introductory remarks to the Budget, municipal chairman P.I. Mohammadali expressed hope of getting a solid waste treatment plant off the block during the 2013-14 fiscal itself.

A solution to the vexed problem of solid waste management in the city seems distant as the government continues to be in the dark on the technology to be adopted at the proposed new plant in Brahmapuram.

Efforts to initiate a waste-to-energy plant based on incineration method have backfired after the three companies that submitted the final bids informed that only 14 units of power could be generated from one tonne of waste.

Asserting that the high level task force is in the process of finalizing the right technology for setting up two waste treatments plants in the state, Environment Minister, Alina Saldanha on Sunday said a proposal is put forth before the Education Department to consider waste collection exercise by students from their homes as an assignment which will make them eligible for marks in the subject of science or environmental science.

Wet waste disposed off in plastic bags in dust bins has not only thrown up a problem for the waste handlers at Sonsodo, but has kicked up a row of sorts over the functioning of the waste treatment plant.

If foul odour continues to emanate from Sonsodo along with high percentage of recyclable rejects, Fomento Green blames it on the wet waste disposed off by house holds everyday.

Garbage is being burnt right inside the Dumane Garbage Treatment plant with CMC denying the activity, but a journo’s photographic evidence says it all

BHUBANESWAR: In a move that may cheer up poor rag-pickers in the state capital, the state government has asked the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to set up plastic waste collection centres

The anti-plastic campaign of the Kochi Corporation, which was shelved following the recent fire at Brahmapuram solid waste plant site, may be re-introduced shortly. Even as the civic authorities vow to curb the use of plastic carry bags in its third attempt, the corporation seemed to be ill-equipped to restrain the menace.

Originally, the corporation had planned to impose the ban on use of plastic carry bags below 40 micron from March 1. It was also planning to undertake extensive campaigns in the city against the use of plastic bags from the first week of March.

Owing to the state government's slack response to garbage treatment problems at the city's dumping grounds, BMC has now decided to take matters into its own hands.
