Assam's Kaziranga National Park (KNP) - the abode of the Great one-horned rhinoceros lies in the flood plains of the Brahmaputra River. Significantly, Kaziranga also has a high density tiger population and is one of the national tiger reserves established in India.

Sept. 23: The chief wildlife warden of the state, Mr Hitesh Malhotra, has banned the shooting of films in the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve at Nallamala stating that the chase scenes, flood lights and other shooting activities pose a serious threat to wild life, particularly the tigers.

The scare of crocodiles has driven devotees away from the ghats of the Ganga river in Hardwar.

Two crocodiles have been sighted upstream in the Ganga river in the past two days. The first crocodile was seen by devotees taking a holy dip at the Birla Ghat in the Ganga on Saturday and as the news spread across the town, panic gripped the people.

Vadodara: Five days after a leopard was spotted in Harni, another was reportedly sighted in the same area on Sunday morning. Forest officials were on their toes throughout the day searching the animal, which was spotted by a milkman in post and telegraph (P&T) colony on Sunday morning.

PHULBANI: A Herd of wild elephants went on the rampage again yesterday killing three persons and destroying many houses in village Kumbharamunda under Daringibadi police station limits in Kandhamal district.

In a bid to contain the accidental killing of animals on a highly sensitive stretch on the NH 37 near Kaziranga, the Forest Department has asked all motorists to strictly abide by speed limits. In case of violation, vehicle owners or drivers will be penalized.

Two wild elephants in a midnight raid damaged a primary school at Sevoke Bazar and ate up sacks full of rice and pulses which they probably could not finish during a previous attack.

Personnel from Sevoke police outpost and the local people pushed the tuskers back into the nearby Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary early this morning. Nobody was injured.
