MUMBAI: Prominent environmental groups in the city will meet on Thursday to protest against the redevelopment plan for Jijamata Udyan, which they say will destroy the zoo's heritage botanical garden. The masterplan for the redevelopment of the Byculla Zoo is currently awaiting the approval of the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC).

Cash-starved Jharkhand zoo offers animals for adoption Birsa Munda Zoological Park at Ormanjhi in Jharkhand too has launched an animal adoption scheme. The state government recently came up with the plan saying it has exhausted all funds for the upkeep of the zoo. Individuals and corporates can adopt a single animal or an entire cage. Donations will be sent to state treasury.

The concept of zoos has undergone a sea change in the past couple of decades. Zoos are no longer meant to serve as showpieces, exhibiting wildlife in confinement. Rather, these are supposed to serve long-term needs of conservation by facilitating research on diverse aspects of wildlife and their management.
